7 July 2022, Balatonkenese
There will be a wine regatta on Lake Balaton again. This prestigious regatta for winemakers and wine-loving sailors traditionally attracts a large number of participants, so the organisers are expecting a large turnout again this year. For the first time you can participate with an electric boat, the most important rule is to have a winemaker on board. The regatta is a prestigious social gathering with quality coastal programmes and a wine bar that offers a wide selection of local products.
This year marks the fourth time the regatta has been called the Wine and Champagne Regatta, but it is essentially the same traditional Eastern Pool Round that has proven so successful in the past. The highly successful, prestigious event for sailing winemakers and wine-loving sailors has been held three times since 2011, each time on a long summer weekend at the Balatonfői Yacht Club. This year’s event will be held from June 24 to 26.
Usually 40-50 boats participate, and the organisers expect the same number this year. The regatta rules state that there must be a winemaker on board each boat – either the captain or the boat must participate under the name of the winemaker/winery on board. There will be 3-8 participants per boat.
As in previous years, the Wine Pier will be opened at the venue. In addition to the 18-20 wineries exhibiting, champagne will be included in the offerings for the cultured beverage consumer for the first time this year. Wineries will be tasting and selling their products from Friday afternoon through Sunday.
During the event, visitors can also vote for the most popular wine at Wine Pier. And as an added attraction, guests can participate in a special champagne tasting.
“Based on the experience of recent years, we expect about 40-50 teams and hundreds of guests to this year’s wine regatta and its supporting programme. Both as exhibitors and participants, several renowned winemakers have expressed interest in participating, and applications are still coming in, with the final deadline the day before the start of the regatta, so we do not yet have an exact number of registrations. What is certain, however, is that the field of participants this year will again be large and of high quality,” says Gabriella Farkas, one of the founders and main organisers of the Wine Regatta.
The regatta traditionally involves legendary yachts that have won major sailing regattas, and there are at least one or two cruisers and famous racers in the field, but since the scoring is done in individual categories, almost everyone has a good chance of a good result. For the first time this year, electric boats are also allowed to participate (on a separate course) and are scored separately.
Also in 2022, the supporting programmes will be exceptional and special. On Friday evening, Bálint Gájer’s band will give a concert and on Saturday evening Balázs Havasi will give an exclusive solo piano concert on the pier of the Balatonfői Yacht Club, the venue. If that is not enough, on Friday evening Lifetime Achievement Award winner György Cserhalmi and on Saturday evening DJ Thomx, one of the star DJs of Retro Radio Fergeteg Party, will entertain the nightlife. The event is open to wineries, competitors and their invited guests.
